Counselor Burnout and Related Variables

Abstract
This study examined variables related to counselor burnout, which was conceptualized as emotional exhaustion, dehumanization of clients, and a reduced sense of accomplishment. The sample consisted of 121 counselors who were practicing in Seoul and Kyunggido. Results showed that the overall level of counselor burnout was relatively low, but a reduced sense of accomplishment was relatively high. Variables correlated with emotional burnout included diffidence, clarity of role, educational level, workload, and conflicts with colleagues, with the first two having the greatest impact. Diffidence, workload and conflicts with colleagues were directly related to dehumanization of clients, and clarity of role was inversely related. A reduced sense of accomplishment, one of the burnout subfactors, was related with personal career, self-regulated efficacy, conflicts with supervisor and informational support from their family. Discussions and future research directions were added.
